Hutt Space

“Hutt Space” is the informal name given to the large region directly to galactic east of the Alliance. It is not actually controlled by any real singular government, but rather by the Hutt Grand Council, which serves primarily to mediate between various Hutt clans, called kajidics. Each kajidic, which can control anywhere from a neighborhood to multiple star systems, operates as a largely independent fiefdom, controlled by a single leader. Many, if not most, of the Hutt kajidics are criminal syndicates, operating both within Hutt space and outside it, often across the galaxy.

Hutt space as a whole has remained traditionally neutral in most galactic conflicts for the last few thousand years, though individual kajidics may involve themselves on one side or the other – and often both sides – when they see a chance for profit. Parts of their territory have been lost and regained to aggressive neighbors during that time, most recently to the Empire, but such fluctuations are generally short-lived. The borders of Hutt space have remained almost unchanged for more than 25,000 years.

Perhaps the most famous world in Hutt space is Nar Shadaa, the so-called “Smuggler’s Moon.” It is actually the primary natural satellite of Nal Hutta, the adopted capital world of the Hutt species (the Hutts rendered their original homeworld uninhabitable some 15,000 years ago in a devastating civil war, before the foundation of the modern kajidic system), and one of the most heavily developed worlds in the known galaxy, rivaling Coruscant, Taris, and Eriadu, though as a nearly lawless world it makes all three seem like paradises by comparison. Still, it is a central trading hub, if not for very much legitimate business, and is a vital artery of commerce for the region.
